CHANGING SEASON? This pear tree in Della May’s back yard on East Gentry Street seemed to think the next season on the calendar would be spring, as it was in full bloom last week. The picture was taken on Thursday when Mark Blackwell at the National Weather Reporting Station at the City Water Plant said the high was 91 degrees. Only three days later, Sunday, Oct. 8, he recorded the low so far this fall at 40 degrees. The weather remained cool through the early part of the week, although a gradual warm-up was forecast before the weekend. Unfortunately, the front that brought the cool weather delivered no rain in the Hamilton area. Staff Photo

In a special called meeting on Friday, Oct. 6, the Hamilton County Hospital District Board of Directors entered into an agreement with Dr. Monte Horne. Dr. Horne and his family were in Hamilton throughout the month of September as he served his rural health resident rotation in the Family Practice Rural Health Clinic.
Hospital administrator Michael Graham said, “I don’t think we could have found a better fit for the Hospital District. Dr. Horne trained at John Peter Smith, approaches family practice in much the same way as Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Lee and wants to live in a small town. Dr. Horne speaks excellent Spanish and will certainly be an asset as the District seeks to care for the Spanish-speaking population in the area. He brings the same small-town values and faith that makes Hamilton such an extraordinary place to live. The District is very fortunate to obtain such a high-quality family and physician.”
Dr. Horne signed a five-year agreement to serve in the Rural Health Clinic and assist in providing care in the emergency room. He will begin his new practice on Aug. 1, 2001.
In other business, the board of directors approved the purchase of two ambulances. The District received a $35,000 grant to assist in the purchase of the new ambulance.
The District also purchased a second used ambulance.

A regional approach to groundwater management will be the focus of a meeting to be held Friday, Oct. 20, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center in Steph-enville.
The meeting is being hosted by the Leon-Bosque RC&D Council. According to RC&D Council member Joe McFarland, the purpose of the meeting is to get people together and begin answering some of the questions that must be addressed before a groundwater conservation district can be created.
“This will be an open and inclusive meeting and anyone out there with an interest in ground water issues should plan on attending,” noted McFarland.
Issues such as district boundaries, services provided by the district, financing the district and governance for the district must be addressed before creation of a district can move to the next level.
At an August meeting in Hamilton, local leaders were told by state representative David Lengefeld that he needs to know what direction local people want to take by Nov. 1, so there is time to get legislation crafted and introduced early in the upcoming legislative session.
The Leon-Bosque RC&D Council will act as a facilitator to bring people from all side of the issue together, evaluate the problems and identify alternatives for underground water management in the region. The RC&D Council is a non-profit organization that provides leadership and coordination for rural development issues. The Council is assisted by USDA/Natural Resource Conser-vation Service.
